De Britse premiers William Gladstone en Winston Churchill gingen Geert Wilders voor in het uiten van ongezouten kritiek op de Islam. Dat toont de publicist Robert Spencer aan in een artikel op het Amerikaanse internetmagazine FrontpageMag.com. Gladstone noemde de Koran een 'vervloekt boek',  terwijl Churchill van mening was dat de Islam een verlammend effect heeft op de ontwikkeling van gelovigen.

"William Gladstone (...) called the Qur'an an 'accursed' book and once held it up during a session of Parliament, declaring: 'So long as there is this book, there will be no peace'."

"Winston Churchill (...) once famously wrote: 'How dreadful are the curses which Islam lays on its votaries! (...) the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world'."
